The Fish In Janitzio

2009Janitzio, Lake Patzquaro, Mexico

We took a boat to Janitzio—the largest island in the Pátzcuaro lake. As we approached a group of fishermen, they performed a rather touristy, but beautiful fishing scene. 6-9 boats formed a circle and dipped their nets in the water in unison. They had nothing to show for it, except one fisherman came up to our boat and showed us one very dead fish that he supposedly just caught—pescado blanco. Then he passed a hat around for tips. You couldn’t help but think that the fisherman have no fish left to catch and now they catch the tourist tips as their income. The pescado blanco that have disappeared as the carp was introduced….We were served many small tiny little fish fried at the local restaurants—but I wonder if that is all that is left?
