The Missing Conch

Personal memory by Braxton Neilly

In the Bahamas there is a very lovely and tasty creature called the Queen Conch. For generations this famous creature had become quite a delicacy in our country. Since tourism is our number one industry, and tourists travel to our country for the food, beaches, people and culture, Restaurants and Hotels started demanding more Conch from the fishermen. So the fishermen started collecting the Conch in all sizes, big and small, adult or even juvenile. Since the Conch was being collected at such a fast paste, they couldn't reproduce quick enough to keep up with the demands of the people, and the Queen Conch was almost extinct in the Bahamas. Luckily right before the species was killed out, the Government made a law stating that if anyone was caught selling or capturing Juvenile Conch, they would either be fined 700$ for each juvenile that they were caught with or they'd be put into prison for a while.
