The Birds

Personal memory by Mercy Njeri Muiruri,

1985Veracruz, Mexico

At the bird count there were three of them. They would spot and start clicking on the counters — keeping track in their notebooks as to what type of bird they saw.Over 15 million passerines and over 5 million raptors travel through this area twice a year — but the fall migration is more defined — in spring the return is far more dispersed in time.Mercy is an ethno-ornithologist and was volunteering to do the bird count. In Kenya when she was a child, a well known naturalist stayed at her parents’ house. She was very interested in his work and in saving birds from the time she was a child.
