Song Birds

Personal memory by Lisa Tremaine

1965Guilford, CT

I remember hearing songbirds as a child, many of them, in the morning and evening especially. I grew up in southern Connecticut and Vermont and only in Vermont do I now hear cedar waxwings. song thrush or the house sparrow. It makes me sad to have quiet in the morning. I live in Texas now and the birds are different. Here, there are doves, grackles, sparrows, cardinals, and a cow-bird now and then near our backyard feeders but hardly a blue jay, a robin, a wren, or a martin. And not since I was a child have I heard a nightingale. Silent spring is indeed a reality.
