Personal memory by Gerard Mirabelli
2018 • Winter Park, FL, USA
I'm originally from Northeastern Pennsylvania, and just last year I moved down to Orlando, Florida to attend college. Where I live in Pennsylvania is very different from where I live in Florida in the sense that my area in PA is much less flat, and has many more hills, woods, and wildlife. In PA, I live 10 minutes away from my small town, in the country and surrounded by trees. Deer run through our lawn all the time and I often hear bird sounds when I'm outside. I've found that in Orlando, Florida, the landscape is very flat. There are many less trees, I see many less animals, and the sounds I hear when I go outside are the tons and tons of cars driving down the street. This area of Orlando is very built-up, and it takes a little longer for me to find large areas of wild flora and fauna. While these two places I live in are very much different from one another, I still find little hidden messages occasionally that nature is still here in my area of Orlando. Just this morning, outside my apartment door on the tall bushes surrounding the pool, I spotted a beautiful white egret hanging out in the morning sun. A few weeks ago, I attended at my school an event to build flower boxes to start attracting pollinators back into the local area. These things go to show that even in more urban areas such as my place in Orlando, Florida, nature is still present, and the community is making great attempts for nature to stay.
