Personal memory by Rachel Zack Ishikawa
1975 • Aquinnah, MA
Zack's cliffs in Aquinnah (formerly Gay Head), MA. Thirty years ago, and long before that, they were massive, mostly brilliant brick-colored clay, streaked with ochre, grey, and white. Now they sit much lower, with only some clay remaining, the dirt beneath now prominent. The lighthouse that rested a hundred feet or more from the edge now teeters 20 feet from a descent into the ocean. Erosion erases childhood awe that I can only tell my children about.
