Family Rituals

Personal memory by Gregory Wilson

1964Chesapeake Bay, United States

As a child and teenager we would go the Chesapeake Bay to catch Blue Crabs. The water was so clear we would tie a string around a tire tube and put a bushel basket in the tube and walk and dip blue crabs, we could chase them the water was so clear. And the crabs plentiful. I could not do this with my son and now I can not do this with my grandson. My father, brother, uncles, and friends and their fathers we would all do this through out the summer. It was a time of young boys being with the men. We would arrive before the sun and then we would watch the sun rise. Boys and men mindful of each other and the earth.

The photograph was taken on Smith Island which is disappearing.
