The Azraq Wetlands

Personal memory by The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, Jordan

1945Azraq Wetlands, Jordan

“My grandfather's stories in the Azraq are about when he would go to hunt birds and fish. The Azraq in the past was completely full of springs and pools; a huge body of water. But with time, all of these resources decreased and became degraded. With developing the area, and also different types of people coming to this area, they have started to pump water from the ground and plant farms and damage the system. Until we reached the status of degraded habitat, with no birds and no fish and no vegetation cover, so many types of birds and many types of animal disappeared. Of the past, they are trying to restore 10% but they have not reached that. They have reached up to 5-6% of the previous oasis.”
