Trees and flowers, Ibn Battutah

1335 CECeylon, Sri Lanka

"This is one of the highest mountains in the world. We saw it from the sea when we were nine days' journey away, and when we climbed it we saw the clouds below us, shutting out our view of its base. On it there are many evergreen trees and flowers of various colours, including a red rose as big as the palm of a hand."

Ibn Battutah and Tim Mackintosh-Smith, The Travels of Ibn Battutah (London: Picador, 2003), 247.
