The Home Of The Weddell Seal

1980s - 2022 CE

"Usually found on near-shore fast ice, Weddell seals are prodigious divers and forage on Antarctic cod. Their highly vocal underwater calls are quite audible to a listener on the surface. With krill stocks severely reduced due to commercial fishing and Antarctic ice shrinking, Weddell seal numbers may decline. Currently, the greatest threat to Weddell Seals may be the unknown effects of a changing climate."

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Reduce carbon emissions and energy use to slow sea ice loss in Antarctica, where Weddell seals breed and rest.

  • Support Antarctic conservation and climate research efforts that protect polar ecosystems and monitor seal populations.

  • Choose sustainable seafood and cut plastic waste to keep the Southern Ocean healthy and safeguard the seals’ food sources
