The Cranes In Bharatpur

2005Bharatpur National Park, India

Bharatpur, a man-made reserve set up by the British in the 1700’s, has become one of the great bird sanctuaries — the nesting grounds for the Siberian crane, among others. Our guide said that for 5 years there have been no nesting cranes due to the lack of water.Boat rides that were once offered throughout the park are no longer, as there is little water left in the reserve. Spoonbills did not nest this year because of the lack of water. Cattle have taken over areas that used to be underwater. The pumps are barely able to keep small areas filled with water. But Bharatpur is home to numerous species still.
