The Common Loon

circa 1993 CE - 2022 CE

"Thirty years ago residents of northeastern North America noticed a decline in population of this “common” bird. When researchers began studying the birds they noticed high levels of mercury in their blood and feathers. The lakes where they made their nests had been poisoned by pollution from coal-burning power plants."

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Reduce energy use or switch to renewable power—mercury from coal-burning is one of the biggest threats to loons.

  • Support organic farming and gardening to keep harmful chemicals out of waterways.

  • Eliminate pesticide and fertilizer runoff and choose organic foods to reduce pollution in lakes and ponds.
