The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna

1970 CE - 2022 CE

"Called 'the lions of the sea,' the tuna can reach a length of twelve feet and weigh up to three-quarters of a ton. Thunnus thynnus is one of the fastest creatures in the ocean, swimming up to 50 mph and crossing the Atlantic in less than 90 days - which makes it susceptible on both sides of the Atlantic to overfishing. The global consumption of tuna is pushing this majestic animal to the brink of extinction."

- Richard Ellis & National Geographic

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Don’t buy it. Don’t eat it. Let friends know bluefin tuna is one of the most overfished fish in the world.

  • Choose MSC-certified or sustainably sourced seafood alternatives, like skipjack tuna, sardines, or mackerel.

  • Support policies and organizations working to end overfishing, protect nursery habitats, and enforce sustainable catch limits.
