Spring Frogs In New England

Personal memory by Cornelia Emlen

1982Vermont, USA

We live in rural Vermont and each spring when it begins to warm and the rains come we are treated to the chorus of peepers. Additionally, there are always a couple of early, wet spring days when 100s of hopping frogs find their way to the roads and jump across on their way to the other side. I remember one night in maybe 1982 driving home from Richmond, VT, and we had to stop our car because the road was carpeted with jumping frogs. My daughter loves to tell people how when she was little her animal-loving-mom would make her walk up the driveway in front of our car to make sure we wouldn't smoosh any frogs on our way up to the house. Now it is 2016 and the numbers of amphibians is way down. The first warmth and wet still does bring the chorus of peepers, but it has become rare to see the numbers of frogs that were once a regular occurrence.
