2019 • Buffalo River Trail, Arkansas, USA
I came to Arkansas in 1974. The Buffalo River had been declared our nation's first national river in 1972, making it one of the few undamned rivers in the lower 48 states. Arkansas citizens such as Neil Compton of Compton Gardens Adjacent to Crystal bridges) fought for over 10 years to keep it from being damned. Today citizens continue to work to keep this river protected and preserved , The Buffalo River Watershed Alliance and its many partners like the Ozark Society have worked for over 6 years to keep industrial scale hog farming out of the river's watershed. In June of 2019, the Arkansas Governor brokered a deal to close the existing large scale hog operation and called for a permanent moratorium on any such future operations.
