Salmon

mid 1800s - 2022 CE

"Scientists believe that about 16 million salmon returned each year to spawn in the native streams throughout the Columbia river basin. Today annual runs of wild salmon have declined to about 3% of their historic abundance. A 1991 report by the American Fisheries Society indicated that 214 of about 400 stocks of salmon, steelhead, and sea–run cutthroat trout in the Northwest and California are at risk of extinction and 106 are already extinct."

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Only choose MSC-certified salmon so you know it was caught in a sustainable manner.

  • Support free-flowing rivers so salmon can migrate naturally between spawning grounds and the sea.

  • Avoid lawn chemicals and pollutants that wash into streams and harm salmon habitat.
