Pileated Woodpeckers

Personal memory by Iwao Tanaka

Waking up to the unmistakable knocking sound of coming from the tall trees around my childhood home. Watching these large majestic birds hunt for grubs and insects up and down the upper tree trunks, sometimes three or four in one tree. We used to see the pileated woodpeckers every week or so, and heard them knocking all summer long.
