Indri

1950 - 2022 CE

“One of the most endangered species of lemur on Madagascar and one of the most threatened primates in the world. The indri live by the coast, where forests have become so fragmented that they are almost too small to sustain viable populations. The main threat is slash-and-burn agriculture a practice that continues even in protected areas. If conservation efforts do not succeed the indri will almost certainly face extinction in the next 100 years.”

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Choose rainforest-friendly products like shade-grown cocoa, coffee, and vanilla to reduce pressure on Madagascar’s remaining forests.

  • Support reforestation and forest-protection efforts that help reconnect the fragmented habitats indri need to survive.

  • Avoid purchasing tropical hardwoods such as rosewood or ebony so logging pressure doesn’t encroach on protected areas.
