Icy Camping In August

1990 CEOregon, USA

We used to camp every July and August in the Cascades of Oregon. Lemolo Lake is high in the hills (4100 ft above sea level), so nights were cold even in summer. It was not unusual to wake up to a film of ice on the water bucket, and frost at the lake edge each morning. We slept in layers of warm winter clothing in the summer! As the years went on, those sorts of overnight temperatures became more rare. Today, it is almost unheard of for the water bucket to freeze on a summer night. Kids don't believe me when I tell them that when I was ten or so, it snowed in August.
