Giraffes

2023 CEEast & South Africa

"Fifteen years ago about 140,000 giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) roamed the plains and forests of Africa. Today that number has plummeted by more than 40 percent, according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.

“Whilst giraffes are commonly seen on safari, in the media and in zoos, people – including conservationists – are unaware that these majestic animals are undergoing a silent extinction.” - Julian Fennessy, co-chair of the IUCN SSC Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group Scientific American & IUCN

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Support organizations that help protect giraffe habitat and are helping to put an end to poaching and trophy hunting.

Share information about giraffes and the threats they face—like habitat loss and poaching—so more people understand they’re vulnerable to extinction.

Choose sustainable products like FSC-certified wood or shade-grown coffee, which helps reduce deforestation in Africa’s savanna regions where giraffes live.
