Blue-Green Algae Blooms In Florida

Personal memory by Maria Moreno

As a native Floridian, I remember spending a significant amount of time at the beach . I remember being in awe of the beautiful marine life and the miles of gorgeous scenery. More recently, the miles of beautiful scenery and wildlife have been affected by the blue-green algae blooms which unlike the red tide, form in fresh water and are caused by runoff of human waste and fertilizers from local farms and neighborhoods, which have polluted Lake Okechobee with phosphorus and nitrogen. This bacteria has killed many animals such as our beautiful manatees , and is progressively taking away the beauty of our beaches and marine life.
